General Questions About NAATI CCL

The NAATI CCL (Credentialed Community Language) test is an official assessment administered by NAATI (National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters). It evaluates your ability to interpret spoken dialogues between English and a community language (LOTE — Language Other Than English) in everyday Australian contexts.

Passing the test awards you a NAATI CCL credential and 5 bonus points towards your Australian General Skilled Migration visa application (subclasses 189, 190, 491).

The NAATI CCL test is ideal for:
  • Skilled migration visa applicants (189/190/491) needing extra points
  • Bilingual individuals who speak English and a NAATI-supported language
  • International graduates seeking PR in Australia who need a points boost
  • Anyone whose skills assessment score is close to — but not quite at — the invitation threshold

The 5 NAATI CCL points apply to Australian General Skilled Migration visas, including Subclass 189 (Skilled – Independent), Subclass 190 (Skilled – Nominated), and Subclass 491 (Skilled Work Regional). These points are added to your SkillSelect points test score.

The NAATI CCL credential is valid for 3 years from the date of issue. After 3 years, you must re-sit the test if you still need the credential for a visa application. Check with your immigration agent for the latest policy.

The NAATI CCL test currently costs approximately AUD 800. This fee is set by NAATI and may change. Always check the current fee on the official NAATI website before booking. Payment is made through the NAATI online portal.

NAATI CCL results are typically available within 4–8 weeks of your test date. You will be notified by email when your results are ready to view in the NAATI portal. If you pass, you can download your official credential certificate.

There is no limit on the number of times you can sit the NAATI CCL test. If you fail, you can book another test session. Each attempt requires a new fee payment. Using our mock tests between attempts is the most effective way to improve your score.

NAATI CCL Scoring & Pass Mark

To pass the NAATI CCL test, you must meet both of these requirements:
  • Overall score ≥ 63 out of 90
  • Each dialogue score ≥ 29 out of 45
Warning: A high total score (e.g. 70/90) will still result in a fail if either dialogue score is below 29/45.

Each of the 28 segments is scored by trained NAATI assessors:
  • 3 marks — All key meaning accurately conveyed
  • 2 marks — Meaning mostly conveyed; only minor omissions
  • 1 mark — Significant meaning lost or misinterpreted
  • 0 marks — No meaningful content, silent, or unintelligible

Note: Segments 1 and 14 (shorter segments) are weighted at 1.5 marks maximum. Segments 2–13 are weighted at 3.5 marks maximum.

A marginal fail occurs when your score is very close to the pass mark: an overall score of 58–62/90, or a dialogue score of 25–28/45. NAATI uses this category for administrative purposes; the result is still a fail and you will need to retake the test.

NAATI CCL Preparation Tips

Preparation time varies by individual language proficiency and prior interpreting experience. Most candidates benefit from 4–12 weeks of focused preparation. We recommend:
  • Week 1–2: Understand the format and take diagnostic mock tests
  • Week 3–8: Practice all 6 domains systematically
  • Week 9–12: Full mock test simulations under timed conditions

NAATI CCL dialogues draw from 6 community domains:
  • Health & Medical — GP consultations, hospital, mental health, pharmacy
  • Legal & Justice — Police, courts, legal advice, tenancy
  • Education — School enrolments, parent meetings, special needs
  • Financial — Banking, Centrelink, insurance, tax
  • Community Services — Housing, welfare, local government
  • Employment — Job interviews, workplace safety, HR

The most common NAATI CCL mistakes that cost candidates points:
  • Adding information not in the original (even to "help" the listener)
  • Omitting key terms — every word matters, especially names, numbers, dates
  • Poor time management — running out of recording time mid-sentence
  • Ignoring one dialogue — scoring < 29/45 in either dialogue means failing
  • Not practising all domains — you can't predict which 2 will appear
